Igor Makarov Gave an Interview to China’s Global Times

Head of the Laboratory for Climate Change Economics at HSE University, Igor Makarov, spoke to China’s Global Times about the prospects for Russia–China economic cooperation, the challenges of the global energy transition, and Russia’s place in the evolving architecture of international trade.

In the interview, Igor Makarov emphasised that Russia and China continue to strengthen their economic ties amid increasing pressure from the West. He highlighted the key role of energy cooperation, particularly in the oil and gas sectors, and described the steady growth in bilateral trade as proof of the effectiveness of Russia’s pivot to the East strategy.

Igor Makarov also commented on trends in the global energy transition, noting that hydrocarbons will remain important over the coming decades, especially for developing countries. He further pointed to the transformation of the global trading system, where regional alliances and bilateral formats are playing an increasingly prominent role, as the influence of multilateral institutions continues to decline.
