Alexander Shestakov Delivered a Masterclass "Biodiversity: Current Situation and Future Challenges"

The loss of biodiversity is becoming one of the main threats of the 21st century – it undermines the resilience of ecosystems, raises questions about food security and increases the risk of new epidemics. At the masterclass, Alexander Shestakov, former Director for Science, Society and Sustainable Futures of the UN Convention on Biological Diversity, spoke about global approaches to the conservation of wildlife and the role of Russia in international initiatives.

The decline in biodiversity is now recognised as one of the key environmental challenges facing humanity. This process carries serious risks, from threats to food security to the emergence of new epidemics and the disruption of the natural balance of ecosystems.

During the masterclass, Alexander Shestakov presented the main approaches to biodiversity conservation based on international experience and legal mechanisms. Drawing on his many years of work in biodiversity conservation and in UN negotiation processes, he spoke in detail about the activities of leading international institutions coordinating countries’ efforts to protect nature.
