Vsevolod Sviridov took part in the RIAC expert seminar on the state of African energy

On June 17, 2025, an expert seminar “Africa's Energy Market: Development Trends and Challenges” was organized by the Russian International Affairs Council (RIAC). Vsevolod Sviridov, Deputy Director of the HSE Center for African Studies, took part in the event.

The program included 2 thematic sessions and 5 blocks. Experts from the Center for the Study of Transition Economies of the Institute for African Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the MGIMO Center for African Studies of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia, the Patrice Lumumba RUDN University and other organizations discussed the strategies of leading participants in the global and African energy markets, compared energy development models, paying special attention to the role of Russia in the implementation of energy projects in Africa.

In his report on "African resources for African markets" Vsevolod Sviridov spoke about the prospects for the development of regional energy markets in Africa.

"Russia is probably the only country interested in using African energy resources by Africans themselves. However, at the moment, the regulatory framework and the main directions of development in the energy sector are being formed by Western investors. The only one exception is Algeria, which has established priority gas consumption and surplus exports at the legislative level. Such a positive experience can be extended to other African countries in the future", he admitted.
