Staff of the Laboratory for Climate Change Economics at the School-Conference "International Climate Diplomacy" in Sirius

As part of the programme, Igor Makarov, Head of the Laboratory for Climate Change Economics, delivered a lecture entitled "Prospects for Russian Exports of Hydrocarbons and Carbon-Intensive Goods under Various Global Decarbonisation Scenarios". In his talk, he discussed the challenges economists address in the fields of climate and environmental policy, and presented the Laboratory’s latest research findings. Igor Makarov also joined an expert session, where participants were able to put their questions directly, and later contributed to the assessment of the final projects.
The Laboratory was further represented by Expert Egor Muravyev and Junior Research Fellow Anna Chistikova. They attended lectures given by leading specialists in climate change, diplomacy, international law, economics and finance, and took part in a UNFCCC climate negotiations simulation. The events of the conference offered participants a deeper understanding of the structure of the international climate regime and the role of Russia and the BRICS countries, insights into the geographical dynamics of global climate change, and practical knowledge of carbon markets, climate finance, and many other dimensions of international climate policy.
Egor Muravyev shared his impressions of the event: "The programme was extremely intensive: each day combined lectures with practical tasks, alongside plenty of opportunities to meet and talk with other participants from completely different fields, as well as with renowned experts invited by the organisers. All this made those five days in Sirius immensely valuable."
Anna Chistikova also praised the high level of the conference: "The organisers managed to bring together participants from a wide range of disciplines – from international relations to ecology, biology and soil science. Meeting everyone highlighted just how interdisciplinary climate science truly is, while the preparation of joint projects allowed us to create something new and unique."
At the conclusion of the conference, participants worked in teams to prepare proposals for potential Russian initiatives at future climate negotiations. The teams of Egor Muravyev and Anna Chistikova were ranked among the top five by the invited experts.
