Georgy Kutyrev's comment on the upcoming elections to the European Parliament
Georgy Kutyrev, a researcher at the International Laboratory on World Order Studies and the New Regionalism at the Higher School of Economics, commented on the upcoming European Parliament (EP) elections for Independent Public Monitoring (IPM) in June 2024.
According to forecasts by Georgy Kutyrev, far-right populists are likely to lead the elections in nine EU member states (Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, France, Hungary, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland and Slovakia) and take the second or the third place in nine more countries (Bulgaria, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Latvia, Portugal, Romania, Spain and Sweden). “We can say that an “ultra-right” turn may happen in the European Parliament. For the first time in its history, a large right-wing populist coalition of Christian Democrats, national Conservatives and radical-right deputies of the EP may arise inside the EP,” the expert suggested, adding that if an “ultra-right” turn does occur, it may to some extent affect the foreign policy of the European Union, which today “remains a part of Washington's overall Euro-Atlantic course aimed at maintaining attention to the collective security of NATO members and deterring Russia as a traditional opponent.”
