The Project group “South Asia and the Challenges of Global Politics” of the Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs invites everyone interested to participate in the Open Seminar “ Challenges to Strategic Stability in South Asia ”. The seminar will be conducted on Tuesday, June 11, 2024, by Akash Shah, Research Officer, Strategic Vision Institute (SVI), Pakistan.

Strategic stability in South Asia faces a number of significant challenges, driven by both internal and external factors. The main actors in this region are India and Pakistan, both nuclear-armed and with a long history of conflicts. These two countries continue to expand their nuclear arsenals and improve delivery systems, creating a risk that even minor incidents could escalate into nuclear confrontation. China, as a regional superpower, also plays a crucial role, influencing the balance of power in the region through strategic partnerships and rivalries. Challenges to strategic stability are exacerbated by issues of cross-border terrorism, unresolved territorial disputes, and internal political instabilities. Efforts by the international community to control arms and prevent nuclear proliferation in South Asia face difficulties due to a lack of trust between key states and their differing geopolitical interests.

Mr. Akash Shah is a Research Officer at Strategic Vision Institute. He is an alumnus of the U.S State Department’s Program on ‘Comparative Public Policy Making’ held primarily at the University of Massachusetts. He was associated with Global Village Space as a Research Analyst where he contributed news analysis on pertinent developments in the realm of security, military technology, and strategic affairs.
