Igor Makarov Speaks at the Cape Town Conversation
Igor Makarov, Head of the Laboratory for Climate Change Economics, took part in the session “Mineral Mavericks: Balancing Extraction, Security, and Sustainability”, which focused on the role of critical minerals in the global economy.
In his remarks, Igor Makarov emphasized that critical minerals are becoming the "new oil," playing a pivotal role in the technological transformation of the global economy and the successful implementation of the green transition. He highlighted the need to remove trade barriers, develop infrastructure, foster regional cooperation, attract investment, and improve national industrial policies to enable more intensive and sustainable use of these minerals. At the same time, he stressed that the role of critical minerals in national economies must be carefully balanced.
Igor Makarov also noted the contribution of Russian companies to the extraction of critical minerals, as well as their successful participation in mining and processing projects in Africa, Asia, and other regions of the world.
