The School of International Regional Studies is a research and educational centre seeking to revive international regional studies as an academic discipline in Russia. The department’s world-class professors train the next generation of regional studies specialists while developing an increasingly prestigious research school.

Over the 10 years of its existence, the "Socioeconomic and Political Development of Modern Asia" (2012–2023) Master's program has successfully completed more than 30 international students from 19 countries. Among them were eight students from Indonesia, four of whom came to meet with Prof. Olga Volosyuk. The program's graduates told that they were all successfully working in both the state and private sectors, applying the knowledge they gained during their studies in the program and at the Higher School of Economics.

Fauzi Bustami, who served as Minister-Counsellor to the Indonesian Embassy in Moscow during his time at HSE, returned from Moscow to work at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia. He retired in 2024.

Azmi Muharom is a senior officer for customer experience at PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (Persero), Indonesia's state-owned electricity company.
They expressed fond memories of their time in Russia and expressed their desire to continue their postgraduate studies at the Higher School of Economics. The conversation was conducted in English, but included the Russian language skills they acquired through HSE's special programs for international students.
