"What signal did the mayoral elections in Seoul and Busan give: A lesson for the future or a verdict?"

On April 13, 2021, the School of International Regional Studies of the Faculty ofWorld Economy and International Affairs, HSE University within the framework of the permanent online seminar «Contemporary area studies», organized the emergency meeting with Vera V. Vishnyakova, Head of the School of International RegionalStudies of the Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs, HSE University. and Kim Yong Un, Senior Researcher at the Center for Korean Studies at the IFES of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Associate Professor of the School of International Regional Studies of the Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs, HSE University, on the topic: "What signal did the mayoral elections in Seoul and Busan give: A lesson for the future or a verdict?»

The meeting was dedicated to the recent elections in the Republic of Korea, where the candidates of the ruling party were defeated. As Dr. Vera Vishnyakova noted, currently in the Republic of Korea there is a drop in support for the President, since a number of his goals and programs have not been implemented. The reason for this is the systemic nature of the problems, which can be radically changed.

According to Dr. Vera Vishnyakova, the recent elections are precisely the failure of the ruling party, and not the success of the opposition.

Dr. Kim Yong Un pointed out in his speech that it is quite difficult to make forecasts about the development of events in South Korea, since this country is subject to changes and forecasts can change repeatedly, depending on the political situation in the country.

The speakers answered all the questions of the participants.
