Cohesion of the Collective West: Causes and Limits

On October 29, 2024, as part of the VI International Conference“The World Majority towards a New International Order”, held in partnership with Institute for International Defense Economy and Strategy, HSE University a session titled“Cohesion of the Collective West: Causes and Limits” took place.

The event was moderated by D. Trenin, Academic Supervisor of the Institute for International Defense Economy and Strategy, HSE University.

The session featured presentations by G. Toloraya, Head of the Center for Russian Strategy in Asia at the Institute of Economics, RAS, and Deputy Director of the Center for Military-Economic Studies at the Institute for International Defense Economy and Strategy, HSE University (“Geopolitical ‘Triangles’ in Northeast Asia and Opportunities for Diplomatic Hedging”); V. Kashin, Director of the Center for Comprehensive European and International Studies at HSE University and Director of the Center for Strategic Studies at the Institute for International Defense Economy and Strategy, HSE University (“Asian Allies of Washington: Expanding and Deepening the Anti-China Alliance Despite Beijing’s Efforts”); P. Tebin, Director of the Center for Military-Economic Studies at the Institute for International Defense Economy and Strategy, HSE University (“The Phenomenon of Western Europeans Abandoning National Interests in Favor of Transatlantic Unity”); F. Trunov, Deputy Director of the Center for Strategic Studies at the Institute for International Defense Economy and Strategy, HSE University, and Senior Research Fellow at the Department of Europe and America, INION RAS (“The Use of NATO, EU, and ‘Coalitions of the Willing’ Formats as an Indicator of Strategic Cohesion of the ‘Collective West’”); A. Chikhachev, Senior Lecturer at the Department of European Studies, Faculty of International Relations, St. Petersburg State University (“France in the Indo-Pacific Region: Between EU Interests and Solidarity with the USA”); and A. Zueva, Expert at the Center for Military-Economic Studies at the Institute for International Defense Economy and Strategy, HSE University (“Military-Economic Aspects of Cooperation between the Republic of Korea and NATO Countries”).

Following the main presentations, a discussion took place with the participation of E. Degtereva, Deputy Director of the Institute for International Defense Economy and Strategy, HSE University; E. Goryushina, Leading Expert at the Center for Strategic Studies at the Institute for International Defense Economy and Strategy, HSE University; and N. Novik, and Expert at the Institute for International Defense Economy and Strategy, HSE University.

The session facilitated an in-depth discussion on the reasons for the cohesion of the collective West and the limits of this unity in the current geopolitical context.
