This conference is conducted in memoriam of the famous HSE Arabist, Hussein Ajjawi. The Middle East section, founded by him, with the support of students and professors, is developing rapidly, while his students continue to explore issues raised by Hussein Ahmed.
Andrey Baklanov, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation, the Current State Adviser of the Russian Federation of the first class, the head of the research sector of the Middle East and North Africa of the School of International Regional Studies at the Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs of HSE, outlined in detail the significant contribution that Hussein Ajjawi made to the development of the faculty. Last year, students of the Middle East section produced recommendations for Russia’s foreign policy in the Middle East, situational games, seminars and special courses are regularly held. Professor Baklanov emphasized the current assets and development strategies of the Middle East section of the School of International Regional Studies, highly appreciating the students’ papers presented at the readings, wishing the participants fruitful discussions and further interaction.
The children of Hussein Ajjawi, Maxim Hussein and Yana Hussein, thanked all the conference participants for the opportunity to preserve the legacy of Ajjawi, as well as for high-quality papers covering key areas of Hussein Ahmed’s academic interests.
Abdullah Issa, First Counselor of the Palestinian Embassy in the Russian Federation, emphasized that the Palestinian issue still remains a cornerstone in world politics. Having noted that Ajjawi’s activities have always been aimed at resolving a number of issues related to Palestinian-Russian relations and thanked all the participants for carrying out this important mission, the ambassador’s adviser reiterated his hope for strengthening ties with HSE University.
Grigoriy Lukyanov, Deputy Head of the Joint Department with RAS Institute of Oriental Studies, the Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs, HSE University, noted that this is the second conference in memoriam of Hussein Ajjawi, and within the framework of these conferences, HSE students are moving according to the course outlined by Hussein Ajjawi. The lifetime mission of Hussein Ajjawi – the Middle East studies – develops at HSE University.
Murad Sadygzade, President of the Russian Middle East Association, stressed the importance of Hussein Ahmed’s personal characteristics in fostering students’ academic studies, expressing the hope that the ideas of Khussein Ajjawi will further stimulate interest of young researchers.
Alexander Bukhanov, President of the HSE Middle East Club, noting that interest of HSE students to the Middle East is steadily rising, which is exemplified by inflow of new participants into the Middle East Club.
