The beginning of the year is a new aggravation of the situation in Syria

On December 8, 2020, within the framework of the permanent online project “It’s worth talking about”, online meeting was held with Andrey Baklanov, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation, the  State adviser of the Russian Federation of the first class, the Head of the research sector of the Middle East and North Africa of the School of International Regional Studies of the Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs of the HSE. The theme of the meeting was “The beginning of the year is a new aggravation of the situation in Syria”.

The rally was opened and moderated by Vera Vishnyakova, Head of the School of International Regional Studies of the Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs, HSE University.

Professor A. Baklanov shared his predictions regarding the line of behavior of American diplomats and politicians whom J. Biden is going to promote in the Middle East direction. In this context, he informed about the recently held regular round of Russian-American political expert consultations.

Pr. A. Baklanov said that, due to the attitude of the American representatives, the US is not going to withdraw from the agenda the issue of regime change in Syria. Washington hopes that the growing sanctions pressure in the coming year may have a "cumulative" effect and lead to a serious economic and political shock.

Americans do not create illusions about the likely holding of presidential elections in Syria in 2021 and the re-election of B. Assad. At the same time, they expect that they will be able to achieve significant success in terms of “delegitimizing” the current leadership of Syria  and non-recognition of the voting results.

Pr. A. Baklanov informed about the most important events related to the situation in Syria: Damascus's appeal to the UN with a complaint about Turkey's actions in relation to water infrastructure facilities, preparations for a meeting of the Constitutional Committee in Geneva, the reasons and nature of a certain aggravation of the situation in the Idlib region, in the North and North-east of the country, as well as in the south of the country, in the Daraa region, the revival of terrorist elements using methods of individual terror against representatives of the security forces and supporters of B. Assad.

Pr. Baklanov answered the questions of the participants.
