VIIIth Congress of the Workers' Party of Korea: Breakthrough or Routine?

On Thursday, January 28th, the School of International Regional Studies of the Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs of HSE University, within the framework of the permanent online seminar “Contemporary Area Studies”, organized a discussion with Kim Young Un, Leading Researcher at the Center for Korean Studies at the Institute for Far Eastern Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Associate Professor of the School of the International Regional Studies, Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs, HSE University on the topic " VIIIth   Congress of the Workers' Party of Korea: Breakthrough or Routine?"

The seminar was moderated by Vera Vishnyakova, Head of the School of Foreign Regional Studies of the Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs, HSE University. The meeting was co-moderated by Eriks Varpahovskis, Research Fellow of the School of Foreign Regional Studies of the Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs, HSE University.

In his speech, Kim Young Un spoke about the 8th Congress of the Workers' Party of Korea, held from January 5 to 12, 2021. Kim Young Un noted that the three-day Report of the Central Committee of the WPK of the 7th convocation, presented by the Chairman of the Party, Kim Jong-Un, contained a critical assessment of the achievements and shortcomings in the activities of the party. The lecturer talked about major changes in the Party Charter, the development of new tasks for the party and the requirements for party members. The expert highlighted the following basic principles of the party's ideological base: "Worship the people as heaven", "Unanimous solidarity", "Self-reliance", on which the entire development of society will be ensured. An attempt was made to assess the significance of the 8th Congress of the Workers' Party of Korea in the country's modern history.
