Post-crisis Middle East: Russia opens new trade missions, prepares to increase its presence

On February, 27, 2021 within the framework of permanent online seminar «It's worth talking about»  Dr. Andrey Baklanov - Professor, Head of the Middle East and North Africa Studies Section of the School of International Regional Studies, Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs, HSE University spoke on the topic: "Post-crisis Middle East: Russia opens new trade missions, prepares to increase its presence."

The seminar was moderated by Dr. V.V. Vishnyakova - Head of the School of International Regional Studies of the Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs, HSE University.

A. G. Baklanov noted that at present, the overcoming of the difficulties and limitations of the period of the fight against the pandemic, the gradual return of "normal" forms of international cooperation coincides with the introduction of serious adjustments to Russia's foreign policy activities.

The Russian Federation will present itself much more firmly, consistently focusing on the primacy of its own interests.

In this turn of foreign policy, the Middle East direction, according to A. G. Baklanov, is seen as very promising, important, and more adapted for stable development than, for example, the European one.

A. G. Baklanov stressed that today the Russian Federation is interested in improving the indicators in the trade and economic sphere. The countries of the Middle East and the Persian Gulf are very suitable partners for the implementation of such a line. A good example is the recent visit to the UAE by Dmitry Manturov, RF Minister of Industry and Trade.

A. G. Baklanov gave the data on trade and investment cooperation between the Russian Federation and the states of the Persian Gulf and the Middle East in general, and informed on the plans for their expansion in the coming period. He shared the information on opening of the new trade missions - in the KSA and Syria, which means that the Russian Federation is vividly building up its presence in the region.

Dr. Andrey Baklanov answered the questions of the participants.
