On March, 10, 2021  the School of International Regional Studies of the Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs, HSE University, together with the Russian Middle East Association within the framework of the permanent online seminar «Contemporary area studies», organized the meeting meeting dedicated to the 10th anniversary of Arab Spring with a  program manager of the Russian International Affairs Council, Ruslan Mamedov. The topic was: «From the Intifada to the October Revolution: the Arab Spring in Iraq?»

The seminar was moderated by Murad Sadygzade, President of the Russian Middle East Association, Assistant Head of the School of International Regional Studies at the Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs of the HSE University.

At the beginning of the meeting, all the participants and the speaker of the event were

greeted by and  Dr. Vera Vishnyakova, Head of the School of International Regional Studies of the Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs, HSE University.

Ruslan Mamedov in his speech noted that the events in Iraq could be named as «litmus test of international relations». Therefore, the events taking place in Iraq are of particular importance.

Applying to the topic of the presentation, Ruslan Mamedov highlighted that the term «intifada» is already known to Iraq. First of all, the "intifada" refers to the Sunni protests that took place in 2012-2013.

Describing the «Arab Spring» in Iraq it should be mentioned that Iraq’s case was different to the events taken place in other states.

The differences in this process, according to the notes of the speaker,  were in Iraq's successful fight against terrorism, an active electoral process and the absence of a monopoly in power, as well as the growth of religion in the political sphere.

The problem issues were following. First of all, the existence of ineffective political system under the occupation. Moreover, there was an influence of the «Arab Spring» in other countries and later the emergence of the Syrian conflict had an impact. The socio-economic problems were also actual in Iraq.

The expert also commented the role of external and regional actors in Iraq’a events. According to the speaker’s words, the main goal of Turkey in Iraq is awareness, as well as the ability to influence what is happening in Iraq.

Ruslan Mammadov also pointed out that today there are many different forces in Iraq. As the expert said, if the situation in Iraq deteriorates, it is not excluded that the American continent will build up in the state.

Ruslan Mammadov answered all the questions of the participants.
