Over the past 10 years, the political system of Iran has been shaken several times. Therefore, the topic of the «Arab Spring» is still relevant today. Farhad Ibrahimov noted that the disturbances began 2 years before the events of the "Arab Spring». One of the prerequisites was the emergence of the "Green Movement" in protest at the victory of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in the presidential election. His ineffective policy, as well as aggressive ways of conducting dialogue with countries, led to a wave of sanctions against Iran and to the restrictions from the UN. As the expert pointed out, referring to the data of the Al-Jazeera TV channel, the protests of June 13, 2009 were called the largest since the Islamic revolution of 1979.
With the advent of the "Arab Spring", the Iranian authorities at first avoided covering the events that had already covered some Arab states at that time. However, the revolutionary events reached Iran after a while. The «Green Movement» was particularly active. Moreover, Farhad Ibrahimov also mentioned that there was an intention of Mousavi, the former Prime Minister of Iran, to return to politics.
Demonstrations have become quite widespread on the territory of the state. First of all, this is the merit of the "Green Movement". Farhad Ibrahimov also stressed that the activity of the Iranian opposition was influenced by the success of the revolution in Egypt and Tunisia.
Noting the results of the events in Iran, Farhad Ibrahimov pointed to the rapid stabilization of the situation in Iran, the collapse of the "Green Movement" and numerous prison sentences of protesters.
At the beginning of the meeting, all the participants and the speaker of the event were greeted by Dr. Vera Vishnyakova, Head of the School of International Regional Studies of the Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs, HSE University.
Speaking about Iran today, the expert said that there is a theoretical possibility of resuming the scenario of the "Arab Spring", but the probability of the implementation of these events is extremely small.
Farhad Ibrahimov answered all the questions of the participants.
