Sunni-Shiite contradictions in the context of the Middle East region

On March, 27, 2021 within the framework of permanent online seminar «It’s  worth talking about» organised the meeting with Dr. Andrey Baklanov - Professor, Head of the Middle East and North Africa Studies Section of the School of International Regional Studies, Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs, HSE University.

The guest of the meeting was a well-known Russian orientalist, a specialist in the Middle East, Alexander Kuznetsov. 

 He presented his newly published monograph "Sunni-Shiite contradictions in the context of the Middle East region", shared exclusive observations and conclusions concerning this complex and multifaceted topic. 

The seminar was moderated by Dr. Vera Vishnyakova - Head of the School of International Regional Studies of the Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs, HSE University. 

During the meeting, Alexander Kuznetsov focused on such issues as the reasons for the aggravation of inter-confessional contradictions in recent decades, the importance of the 1979 revolution in Iran for the growth of self-consciousness of Shiite communities, the ratio of internal and external factors that influenced the confrontation between Iran and Saudi Arabia, a number of other Arab states, the specifics of the situation in Iraq, Syria, and Lebanon. 

Then there was a discussion, during which Alexander Kuznetsov answered the questions of the participants of the meeting.
