Trends and future in this transitional roaring twenties of the 21st Century (2021-2030)

On March 30, 2021 the School of International Regional Studies of the Faculty ofWorld Economy and International Affairs, HSE University within the framework of the permanent online seminars«Contemporary Area Studies», organized a meeting with a Bert Van Thilborgh, Lector at Thomas More University. The topic of the meeting was "Trends and future in this transitional roaring twenties of the 21st Century (2021-2030)".

The seminar was moderated by Irina Strelnikova, Research Fellow at the School of International Regional Studies, Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs, HSE University.

In the speech, Bert Van Thilborgh put a lot of attention on the wildcards. He defined wildcards as an events that changing society and causing disruption. In addition, it was mentioned that wildcards can be natural or caused by human behavior. The most widely spread examples of human behavior wildcards Bert Van Thilborgh noted the Second World War and the revolution in France in 1789.

As the expert said, the majority of wildcards usually defined as a negative. On the other hand, the world knows many examples of positive wildcards. For example, fire, money or wheel.

The speaker said that nowadays the impact of wildcards are becoming more and more global and spread much more faster.

To prevent global problems, for instance the global warming or bioterrorism we, as a humanity can combine things as an adaption of human behavior, use the technological solutions and go to the new planets in our Solar System.

It was mentioned that normally society is changing very slowly. With new wildcards we do not have a lot of time and we should learn and find how to cope with these circumstances.

Speaking about current time, Bert Van Thilborgh stressed that we have good perspectives. Firstly, it is connected with vaccination. As all of us know, the pandemic is still does not finish and we try to adapt our behavior to the new rules of life. In this case, we have to trust to the new rules and then transformation will be done.

The new perspectives is also related to the workforce and to the abilities of working and vacation at the same time. Obviously, it is connected with the technologies and artificial intelligence. Moreover, we can see how the labor relations are changing. People are getting the job from the foreign employers because there is no need to visit the certain office.

The speaker noticed put the attention on the following words: «Work and life will be mixed in the future». The only question we have to ask ourselves is how I can respond to the digital transformation.

Bert Van Thilborgh also mentioned that we should bear in mind our social connection and try to keep them strong. Fortunately, as the expert said, we see worldwide many initiatives that try to restore, enable and perpetuate connections.

One more transformation that is going to occur soon is a cashless economy. This cashless economy is also relevant to the current circumstances. Nowadays, as it was said, it is not clean to pay money in each other’s hands because of COVID-19.

The summary of this transformation is following. All of us should find how to integrate wildcards and how to deal with them.

Bert Van Thilborgh answered all the participant’s questions.
