On February 25, 2022 the School of International Regional Studies of the Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs, HSE University within the framework of the permanent online seminars «Contemporary Area Studies», organized a meeting with  with Dr. Evgeny Kremnev, Associate Professor, Head of the Department of Oriental and Regional Studies of the Asia-Pacific Region, Irkutsk State University.

Contemporary Area Studies: Dr. Evgeny Kremnev

The seminar was moderated by Dr. Evgeny Kanaev – Deputy Head of the School of International Regional Studies, HSE University.

During the meeting three main issues were discussed: how foreign regional studies differ from the rest of regional studies and oriental studies as well as how foreign regional studies should be studied and taught.

Dr. Kremnev shared his experience of how, within the framework of Oleg Gottlieb's school of oriental and regional studies, a place is allocated for foreign regional studies in the educational environment.

At the beginning the speaker touched upon the theory and methodology of foreign regional studies, both from domestic and foreign experience, and paid attention to the object and subject of the discipline and its theoretical base. Evgeny Vladimirovich also spoke about the fact that a number of monographs on regional studies in the USA, Japan, Russia, Korea, and the Asia-Pacific region were published within the framework of the project “History and Methodology of Regional Studies in the Mainstream of Transdisciplinary Regional Studies”. The result of the monographs was the book "Transdisciplinary Regional Studies: Theory and Methodology".It described the conceptual foundations that lay transdisciplinary regional studies as a new stage in the development of science.

Further, the invited specialist devoted his speech to foreign regional studies as a direction in universities, what are the goals and objectives of the centers for training specialists in foreign regional studies, with the help of what tools these goals and objectives will be achieved. Foreign regional studies as an educational field aims to train a specialist who has and is developing a comprehensive understanding of the region. The tasks are: to form competencies aimed at a comprehensive transdisciplinary study of the region, analysis of its development and designing a strategy for interregional interaction. Speaking about the study tools, Dr. Evgeny Kremnev named the theoretical and methodological complex, interdisciplinary educational and methodological complexes and the combination of practices.

At the end of the seminar the issue of foreign regional studies as an independent area of training was consecrated. The topic of differences between foreign regional studies and related disciplines was raised: world economy, political science, world history and international relations.

After the speech, a session of questions was held, which touched upon the features of the comprehensive training of regional studies.
