Section “End of Greater Europe”

The final session of the IV International Conference “The World Majority in Contemporary International Realities: From Fragmentation to the New Institution” on December 2, 2022 was focused on the discussion of the relationship between the internationalpolitical changes and domestic political processes in the Western countries at the present stage. Section «End of Big Europe» was organized together with colleagues from the Institute of Scientific Information on Social Sciences of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The scientific head of the Faculty of World Economy and international Affairs, HSE University Dr. Sergey Karaganov took part in the work of the section.

The session was opened with a keynote address by Dr. Alexey Kuznetsov, Director of the Institute of Social Science Information of the Russian Academy of Sciences, in which the speaker analysed the collapse of the potential of the European Union as an autonomous supranational global power centre. The report noted that the changes that the European Union is undergoing are far-reaching and multidimensional and have an impact on the shaping of a new international political, financial and economic order. The logical continuation of Dr. Kuznetsov’s speech were the reports by Dr. N.Y. Lapina (INION RAS) on the position of France in world politics, Dr. F.O. Trunov (INION RAS), on the factors of military strengthening of Germany, Dr. E.V. Ananyeva (IE RAS) on the modern policy of Great Britain, Dr. Y.D. Kvashina (IMEMO RAS), the position of the southern European members of the EU and, above all, of Greece. The conclusion of this part of the discussion was the report of Dr. D.J. Bazarkina (IE RAS) “The EU approach to counteracting hybrid threats”.

A number of presentations at the session focused on the current situation in Eastern Europe. Dr. A.A. Gabarta focused on European policy of Poland, Dr. A.A. Pivovarenko - on intra-party problems of Croatia. The final report of the section was delivered by the director of the Institute of European Studies (Belgrade) Dr. M. Djurkovic on the reorientation of the new radical right in Europe, their gradual transition from pro-Russian to Euro-Atlantic positions.

The discussion touched upon the issues of determining the degree of interconnectedness and interdependence of the processes that change the political and financial-economic landscape of the geostrategic regions, the value transformation of European societies and European civilization as a whole.
