Expert Round Table “The Middle East in the New Geopolitical Realities”

The School of Regional Studies of the Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs of the HSE University organized an expert round table “The Middle East in the New Geopolitical Realities” on April 6, 2023 within the framework of XXIV Yasin (April) International Academic Conference on Economic and Social Development.

Dr. Olga Volosyuk, Professor, Head of the School of Regional Studies of the Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs of the HSE University, addressed the participants of the event with a welcoming speech.

The moderator of the round table was Dr. Vitaly Naumkin, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Head of the Joint Department of the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Academic Supervisor of the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

 The main report was made by Dr. Vasily Kuznetsov, Deputy Director of the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Director of the Center for Arab and Islamic Studies of the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

The discussion was attended by:

  • Dr. Nabil Fahmy, Honorary Guest of the Conference, ex-Minister of Foreign Affairs of Egypt, Dean of the School of International Relations and Public Policy of the American University in Cairo;
  • Dr. Alastair Crooke, founder and head of the international information and analytical group Conflicts Forum, British politician and diplomat;
  • Dr. Ahmed Al-Waheishi, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Yemen to the Russian Federation;
  • Dr. Wassim Kalaajieh, coordinator of the Al-Wasatiya Forum, Lebanese politician and publicist;
  • Dr. Andrey Baklanov, Professor, Head of the Middle East and North Africa Studies Section of the School of Regional Studies of the Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs of the HSE University, Deputy Chairman of the Association of Russian Diplomats;
  • Dr. Viktor Smirnov, Head of the Israel Studies Department at the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences;
  • Dr. Elena Melkumyan, Leading Researcher at the Center for Arab and Islamic Studies of the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences;
  • Dr. Tatiana Karasova, Leading Researcher of the Department of Israel Studies at the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences;

  • Dr. Igor A. Matveev, Senior Researcher at the Center for Arab and Islamic Studies at the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences;
  • Dr. Grigory V. Lukyanov, Researcher at the Center for Arab and Islamic Studies at the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Senior Lecturer and Deputy Head of the Joint Department of the IOS RAS at the HSE;

  • Dr. Elena Dunaeva, Senior Researcher at the Center for the Study of the Near and Middle East of the IOS RAS.

The participants of the Round Table discussed the role and importance of the Middle East in the formation of a polycentric world. During an interesting discussion, both the general problems of the region and the situation in individual countries were considered. Special attention is paid to the further development of Russia's relations with the countries of the Middle East in accordance with the new Concept of the foreign Policy of the Russian Federation.
