Head of the School of Regional Studies of the Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs, HSE University Dr. O. Volosyuk noted the importance of research into the role of countries of the Global South in modern international relations, which was launched as part of the school’s research projects. These issues were discussed at the school’s earlier round table “Russia and the most influential countries of the Global South: comparison of approaches to the new international political and economic-financial order,” within which issues of relations between Russia and the countries of the Global South were discussed.
Key topics raised at the roundtable included the impact of the Global South on international relations, effective advocacy for the South on the global stage, challenges to economic development and international cooperation, and climate change issues and strategies to mitigate its effects.
In his report Dr. A. Kuznetsov, director of INION RAS, highlighted the results of the “new discovery” of Russia by the East and the main problems of turning Russia’s trade to the global South. According to the expert, there are still few tangible changes in the industry: raw material exports have been reoriented, there has been a renewal of equipment suppliers and successful food exports. However, problems remain in the service sector, especially in the export of educational services. Insufficient competence in analyzing competitive advantages and lack of language training interfere with interaction with partners. Dr. Kuznetsov also noted the increased secrecy in the implementation of the strategy for the global South and the lack of necessary institutional support from the state.
The report “Financial cooperation in Latin America: multilateral development banks in the context of global change” was made by Dr. Bruno de Conti, professor at the Department of Economic Theory at the University of Campinas (Unicamp).
The discussion part of the event was opened by Dr. A. Likhacheva, Dean of the Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs, HSE University who spoke about the formation of Russia as part of the “Asian economy”, since more than 60% of the current trade turnover falls on the countries of Greater Asia, and also emphasized the importance of studying the role of the global South in the modern global economy. political and economic system of the world order.
