On February 25, 2026, the second Arctic Research Seminar, entitled  “Developments and Transformations in European Union Arctic Policy before and after 2022,”  was held at HSE University. The event was organised by the Centre for Interdisciplinary Arctic Studies at Institute for Economics of Natural Resources and Climate Change, HSE University.

On February 19, 2026, the Centre for Water Resources Research at the HSE Institute for Economics of Natural Resources and Climate Change held its second monthly Water Workshop, dedicated to the geopolitics of water in Latin America. Experts discussed how the growing interest of global powers in the region is linked to access to freshwater resources and how realistic the scenario of “water wars” might be.

On February 10, 2026, the Centre for Centre for Interdisciplinary Arctic Studies at Institute for Economics of Natural Resources and Climate Change, HSE University, held its first Arctic Research Seminar, entitled “The Greenland Question: Factors, Prospects and Development Scenarios.” Experts examined the impact of the Greenland agenda on transatlantic relations, security, and global markets.

On January 28, 2026, the Centre for Water Resources Research of the Institute for Economics of Natural Resources and Climate Change at HSE University held its first Water Workshop. Participants discussed institutional constraints and opportunities for regional cooperation in the field of water security, with a particular focus on Kazakhstan.

An article by Igor Makarov, Director of the HSE Institute for Economics of Natural Resources and Climate Change, co-authored with Elizaveta Smolovik, Junior Research Fellow at the Laboratory for the Climate Change Economics, has been published in Energy Research & Social Science, one of the leading international journals in the field of energy and social research. The study analyses which countries stand to gain or lose in the context of the global energy transition.

Igor Makarov, Director of the HSE Institute for Economics of Natural Resources and Climate Change, delivered a lecture on the future of sustainable development and the role of BRICS countries in shaping a new global agenda beyond 2030.

Igor Makarov, Director of the HSE Institute for Economics of Natural Resources and Climate Change, and Anastasia Likhacheva, Dean of the Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs at HSE University and Director of the Centre for Water Resources Research, took part in the session "Security in Eurasia: Economic Dimensions" held as part of the Eurasian Conference of the Valdai International Discussion Club.

On December 11, 2025, a special event was held to mark the launch of the Institute for Economics of Natural Resources and Climate Change at the Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs of HSE University. The programme featured presentations by the heads of the Institute’s divisions outlining its key areas of work, the launch of a special issue of the journal  Contemporary World Economy, and an expert discussion on the outcomes of COP30 in Brazil.

Anastasia Likhacheva, Dean of the Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs at HSE University and Director of the Centre for Water Resources Research of the Institute for Economics of Natural Resources and Climate Change, took part in a meeting of the Scientific and Expert Council under the Security Council of the Russian Federation, where she delivered a keynote report on water challenges in Central Asia.

From 3 to 5 December 2025, the Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs at HSE University hosted the XIII Annual Conference on the World Economy, “BRICS and Rethinking the Global Economic Order”. Staff members of the Institute for Economics of Natural Resources and Climate Change at HSE University took part in the conference, presenting a number of academic papers.
