Session “Southeast Asia in the Context of Global Turbulence: Plans, Realities and Prospects at XXIV Yasin (April) International Academic Conference on Economic and Social Development

On April 11, a session entitled “Southeast Asia in the Context of Global Turbulence: Plans, Realities and Prospects, as part of Section IA Oriental Studies, XXIV Yasin (April) International Academic Conference on Economic and Social Development, took place. Evgeny Kanaev (the moderator, HSE University), Tatiana Kolesnikova (SPB GUAP), Mikhail Terskikh (IMEMO RAS), Liu Xingtao (Shenyang University) and Dmitry Fedorenko (HSE University) participated in the session.The participants focused on major issues shaping politics, economy and security in Southeast Asia. Salient features of ASEAN policy amidst a new Cold War, the trans-national digital infrastructure, exemplified by the 5G Internet, as a priority of ASEAN Economic Community 2025, protectionism and free trade as part of policy of ASEAN and its member states, Chinese expert approaches to Southeast Asia from a Belt and Road Initiative Perspective were discussed in detail. The speakers offered recommendations on how to increase efficiency of Russia’s and China’s policies, as well as of China-Russia cooperation, in Southeast Asia. The presentations and the subsequent discussion demonstrate that Southeast Asia is increasing in significance for the Russian Federation and the People’s Republic of China. Russian and Chinese scholars will join efforts in producing recommendations on major directions, measures and mechanisms of goal setting and policies of their countries, to their collective advantage.

On April 10, the session «India as a leading Power: Foreign policy initiatives and priorities» was held in an online format within the framework of the section «Oriental Studies» (heads: Dr. O.V. Volosyuk, Dr. T.V. Bordachev, Dr. A.N. Karneev). The moderator of the session was Dr. Olga Kharina, Research Fellow in the School of International Regional Studies.

The monograph Regions in the Contemporary World: the Global Turbulence and Its Impact on Asia edited by the WEIR faculty has been published

In January 2022, the collective monograph entitled Regions in the Contemporary World: the Global Turbulence and Its Impact on Asia / Ed. by E. Kanaev, S. Luzyanin, A. Baklanov, V. Vishnyakovawas published. The monograph is an outcome of the II International Conference “East and West in the New Transformation Phase: Asia Encountering the Challenges of Deglobalization”, organized by the World Economy and International Affairs faculty, HSE University, on December 16-17, 2020. It is the second issue of the book from the “Regions in the Contemporary World” series (the first monograph entitled Regions in the Contemporary World: Globalization and Asia (in Russian) was published in 2020. It demonstrates that conferences on regional studies with outcomes as academic monographs are held regularly at the World Economy and International Affairs faculty

Open Lecture "Towards new Political and Financial World Orded: Russia and Middle East and Central Asian Countries"

December 6 an open lecture was given by Andrei Glebovich Baklanov, Assistant Deputy Chairman of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of Russia. The event was organized by the Department of International Regional Studies of the Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs, HSE and the Council on Foreign and Defense Policy. Ambassador of Saudi Arabia, His Excellency Raid bin Khalid Krimli, and Ambassador of Yemen, His Excellency Ahmed Salem Al-Wahishi and representatives of diplomatic missions from the People's Democratic Republic of Algeria, the Kingdom of Bahrain, the Arab Republic of Egypt, the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, the Islamic Republic of Iran, the State of Qatar, the State of Kuwait, the Republic of the Sudan and the League of Arab States took part in the event. Also members of the Council on Foreign and Defense Policy, as well as staff and students from HSE and other universities were presented.
