Global South Discussions: the First Joint Workshop between HSE University and Peking University

On June 16, 2026, HSE and PKU held the first joint online-workshop “The Global South: New Prospects for Cooperation”. The format was initially proposed and by Fei Haiting, Tenured Associate Professor at the School of Government of Peking University and supported by Anastasiia Piatachkova, Deputy Head of the Asia-Pacific Sector at the Centre for Comprehensive European and International Studies (CCEIS) of HSE University during her long-term internship at Peking University. The event brought together leading experts from both countries for an in-depth discussion of the conceptual foundations, regional specifics, and prospects for multilateral interaction among Global South countries amid the transformation of the world order.

The 2026 Forum theme was "BRICS and Sustainable Development in a Multipolar World: Governance, Innovation, and Market Transformation". The event brought together over 100 students, postgraduate researchers, early-career scholars, and experts from BRICS nations to discuss pressing issues of sustainable development, global economic transformation, and international cooperation.

From April 14 to 17, our students studying in Rostov-on-Don under the two-degree program of the National Research University of Higher School of Economics and the Southern Federal University "Caucasus and the Middle East in the system of regional and International Relations" visited the Higher School of Economics. This is a joint network program on foreign regional studies, supervised by the Faculty of World Economics and World Politics of the National Research University Higher School of Economics and the Institute of Sociology and Regional Studies of the Southern Federal University. The student delegation consisted of eight representatives of the 3rd and 1st year students, as well as Anna Shapovalova, Associate professor at the Institute of Sociology and Regional Studies. The visit was timed to coincide with the E. G. Yasin International Conference held at the Higher School of Economics.

In late March 2026, an official meeting took place between a delegation from HSE University and delegations from Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU); the Government of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam; and the Embassy of Vietnam in the Russian Federation. The participants discussed key areas of cooperation that will help strengthen ties not only between the universities, but also between the two countries.
